'The Liminal'

Liminal

  1. occupying a position at, or on both sides of, a boundary or threshold.

  2. relating to a transitional or initial stage of a process.

This collection emerged in the in-between, a season of leaving one space and entering another. It’s the first body of work I’ve created since moving into our new home. This move marked a massive spell of shifting, settling and beginning again. Without a dedicated studio space, I felt ungrounded and had to reimagine how I approached the canvas. What was once a spontaneous practice of pouring paint and letting it carry me, became slower, quieter and more intentional. My process evolved into something more ritualistic in nature, a series of repeatable steps that settled my nervous system in an unfamiliar home and city.

Within that passage, painting became both a ritual of grounding and an act of release. Through a softened palette and fine linework, these works embody the essence of the liminal: neither here nor there, but suspended in transition. They speak to the beauty of becoming, the quiet weight of thresholds, and the silence of change as it unfolds.

Every piece in The Liminal is painted on a delicate weave of canvas, where layers of pigment create a translucent depth that allows the raw fiber to breathe through. They are framed in solid white oak, a timeless grain that grounds the work and complements its organic quality. Over time, both canvas and oak will soften and deepen, aging gracefully alongside the lives they inhabit.

In many ways, this collection feels less like something I created and more like something that moved through me. Inspiration, I believe, is gifted. It does not fully belong to me; I’m simply one of many channels it chooses to move through. That is the mystery that keeps me curious, the quiet pull toward the canvas, and the possibility of making something undeniably true and beautiful out of the in-between.
